Retina Surgery

Retina surgery is a group of microsurgical procedures for the back of the eye, including vitrectomy. It is used to repair conditions such as retinal detachment, diabetic vitreous bleeding, macular holes and epiretinal membranes.

It is needed for sight-threatening problems of the retina and vitreous that cannot be managed with drops or laser alone. The goal is usually to repair the retina, stop further damage and preserve as much vision as possible.

The surgery is carried out under anaesthesia, so it should not be painful during the procedure. Some discomfort afterwards is normal and is usually managed with the medication and advice your surgeon provides.

Recovery varies with the type of surgery and the condition treated, and can take several weeks. Some procedures require you to hold a particular head position for a time, and your surgeon will give you specific instructions for your case.
