B-Scan Ultrasonography

Ultrasound imaging of the back of the eye, used to assess the retina and vitreous when a dense cataract or bleeding blocks the doctor's direct view.

What is a B-scan?

A B-scan uses sound waves to create a cross-sectional image of the inside of the eye. It is especially useful when the view of the retina is obscured, for example by a mature cataract, vitreous haemorrhage or dense corneal scarring.

What it can reveal

A B-scan can detect retinal detachment, intraocular tumours, foreign bodies and bleeding, allowing accurate diagnosis even when the back of the eye cannot be seen directly.
